Torah Bontrager, Executive Director of the Amish Heritage Foundation

Raised Amish, Torah Bontrager escaped in the middle of the night at age 15 without telling anyone goodbye. She left with only what she could carry: the clothes on her back and $170. She didn’t know if she’d ever see her siblings, relatives, or community members again. To her knowledge, she's the first Amish escapee to graduate from an Ivy League school, Columbia University in New York City. In 2018 Torah founded the Amish Heritage Foundation, which, among other initiatives, is attempting to overturn the 1972 US Supreme Court case Wisconsin v. Yoder and make education a federal right for all children. Torah is the author of the memoir, An Amish Girl in Manhattan, and her story has been featured on MTV, Tim Ferriss’ blog, Forbes.com, and HuffPost.
